A Typical E-Mail Network

A typical Internet e-mail network is comprised of client computers which establish a communication channel with Message Transfer Agents. These MTAs, alternately known as mail servers, are computers run by Internet Service Providers. A message originates at a client computer, is transferred to an MTA which in turn establishes a two-way communication channel via the Internet with an MTA of the intended recipient. After some negotiation between MTAs, the message is sent. The receiving MTA deposits the message into the intended recipient’s mailbox for subsequent retrieval.
